If you are contemplating having cosmetic plastic surgery, you MUST firstly do your research. There are many GP-type surgeons that merely pretend to be plastic surgeons. Please become familiar with the differences between properly qualified plastic surgeons and medical practitioners that also perform cosmetic surgery.

In your initial consultation with any plastic surgeon, you must have a checklist of questions about the procedure, the surgeon and the postoperative recovery. more

Concealed Scar Techniques in Breast Augmentation (April 2005)

With Breast Enlargement on the rise in Sydney, more and more patients enquire about variations in scar/incision technique. Although, the scar should not be the only issue in choosing the appropriate augmentation procedure, it seems to be a major talking point in my cosmetic consultations.

The periareolar (around brown part of the breast) and trans-axillary ( via armpit) incisions have gained popularity in recent times. These incisions tend to be reasonably concealed and in properly selected patients produce satisfactory scars. Also on the positive side the post-op recovery time is not affected by the choice of these concealed scar techniques.

Mini- facelift (February 2005)

Dr Tavakoli talks to Australian Cosmetic Surgery Magazine about the new MACS facelift technique.

A mini-facelift does not mean mini-result but mini-scar! With this procedure there's only one small incision in front of the ear that can extend into the hairline.

The skin as well as the subcutaneous tissues (like muscles and fat) are tightened and the excess is removed. A mini-facelift takes about 2 hours and can be performed under a local anaesthetic. After the operation you will be required to wear a bandage around the head to reduce possible swelling and bruising. This bandage can be removed after 24 hours.

Mini-facelift also means mini-recovering period! You can go home the same day. The swelling will disappear after 7 to 10 days. And after one week you will be able to resume all your social activities.

A mini-facelift is meant to give you a more youthful appearance but this can not be done at the expense of your personal outlook. Therefore in performing a mini-facelift the most natural result is aimed at.

It's also important to realise that a mini-facelift will not stop the skin from stretching or losing its elasticity as you grow older. A new mini-facelift can be performed after 5 to 10 years but the effect is for life. If you have a facelift, you will certainly look better after ten years in comparison to the ones who didn't have one.

Sometimes, during the operation a mini-liposuction around the chin is performed.

Therefore, in summary there are a number of advantages to the MACS lift:

1. Quick procedure (an average of 2 hours compared to 5 or 6 hours for a traditional face-lift).

2. Operation performed with the patient under local anaesthesia.

3. No admission in the hospital required.

4.Quick rehabillitation after the operation (7 to 14 days compared to 3 to 6 weeks for a traditional face-lift).

5. Inconspicuous, short scar.

6. No unnatural changes in the appearance (wind tunnel effect, too tight skin, changed expression, altered implantation of the hair lines in front and behind the ear.
